Vampirella was a fictional super-heroine created in 1969 by Forrest J Ackerman and drawn by comic book artist Trina Robbins. Vampirella originally came from Drakulon, a planet full of Vampire-like people known as Vampiris, who drank blood which flowed like water.
Drakulon orbits a binary star which brings regular drought to the planet, threatening their blood supply and potentially their lives. When a US space shuttle crashes on their planet, Vampirella uses it to travel to earth to acquire blood and save her Vampiris.
On earth, she meets Dracula, a forgotten member of the Vampiri race who had left Drakulon many centuries ago but had become corrupted by Chaos, a demonic enemy. Vampirella must save Dracula and the Vampiris of Drakulon.
The series was published by Warren Publishing and ran for a total of 113 issues. In the 1990s the series was bought and rebooted by Harris Comics, as Warren Publishing had gone out of business by the mid 1980s. Harris would continue to produce Vampirella stories through the early 2000s.
In 2010, Dynamite Entertainment purchased the Vampirella rights off of Harris Comics and created their own series of Vampirella which ran for 38 monthly issues before ending in 2014. Dynamite relaunched the series again for a fourth iteration in 2017 written by Paul Cornell and Jeremy Whitley, and then again in 2019 with new writers Christopher Priest and Ergun Gündüz to celebrate the characters 50th anniversary; a relaunch of 25 issues.
In the fifth reboot of the series the storyline ends the long running marriage of Vampirella to Dracula which led to a 2021 spin-off series entitled, Vampirella/Dracula: Unholy!
Vampiverse, a multiverse spin-off comic was launched following that wherein Vampirella must find the cause of what is killing her other fellow Vampirellas, created by Jeannine S. Acheson and Thomas Sniegoski.
Mike The Pike Productions, Inc. bought the worldwide film, television and streaming rights from Dynamite Entertainment in March of 2021.
