Variant Comics Final Countdown
This is what you've been waiting for! Here are the top 5 most valuable comic books of the modern age (at least, the variant covers).
We also publish a list below from #1 through #100 in order of record sale.
#5: Wolverine 1 (Deadpool) Campbell Variant (2010)
Record sale: 9.8 $9,995
Minimum value raw: $1,500
Estimated to be as few as 450 copies sent out, this, simply one of J. Scott Campbell’s best, quickly became a fan favorite, and its overall rarity caused its prices to soar.
#4: Amazing Spider-man 678 Quinones Venom Variant (Mary Jane) (2012)
Record sale: 9.8 $5,530
Recent sale: 9.4 $2,050 (4/21)
Minimum raw value: $2,000
Instantly recognizable by anyone in the hobby, this was a hit right out of the gate, quickly became an iconic image of the variant comics modern era, and is what's largely to thanks for the entire trend of "Venomized" covers.
There’s just something about the idea of the Venom symbiote overtaking Mary Jane, and the slick cover swipe that Joe Quinones came up with that immediately resonated with collectors and became instantly iconic.
Be careful when shopping for this cover, as there are reprints of this though those have become valuable in their own right, as this comic’s prices continue to rise.
#3: Danger Girl 2 Ruby Red Smoking Gun Variant, Campbell (1998)
Record sale: 9.8 $5,000
Minimum value raw: $1,500
Very difficult to find and almost never offered for sale anywhere, this early pin-up style work by J. Scott Campbell features the protagonist in a very provocative pose in a manner that the artist would later become very well known for.
Be careful when buying, as this has been reprinted multiple times (although even the reprints can sell for a couple hundred dollars).
#2: Batman 608 Retailer Incentive Edition (RRP) Lee (2002)
Record sale: 9.8 $4,080
Minimum value raw: $1,500
One of the earliest variant comics of the retailer incentive kind, approximately 500 of these with a special Jim Lee cover were given out directly to retailers who attended the Retailer Roundtable Program (RRP) event hosted by DC.
This book also features the first appearance of and is Part One of the legendary storyline Hush.
#1: Amazing Spider-man 667 Gabrielle Dell'otto Variant (2011)
Record sale: 9.8 $33,600
Minimum value raw: $2,000
Said to have as few as 225 copies printed, this stunning variant comics cover was the first modern variant to break the five figure threshold, and was followed by a sale of a 9.6 for $8,000 shortly thereafter.
Originally intended to be a 1 for 100 qualifying order for retailers, Marvel thought it was being cute by not announcing this Gabriele Dell'otto cover until after ordering was already closed for the month, and then only giving retailers a few days to act (assuming they even saw it).
End result: almost no-one ordered it, turning this issue of Amazing Spider-Man into one of the rarest of all time, and, naturally, one of the most sought after.
This Variant Comics Top 100 is a work in progress.
While the record price shown below is not in the exact order, the most recent sales have been used to determine each book's approximate position on this table.
We will update this from time to time as more sales data emerges.
